Like anyone I love my sleep. I’m not worth knowing when I do not get enough sleep. Ever wondered why we spend more than a third of our lives sleeping? Surely anything we spend that much time doing must have a lot of benefits? Margaret Thatcher is quoted saying ‘sleep is for wimps’, but neuroscientist Russell Foster explains why it is essential for healthy normal cognitive function, and when we do not get enough we compromise our decision making ability, creativity, mental health and even immune function.
